The Alabama Centennial half dollar is a commemorative fifty-cent coin struck by the United States Bureau of the Mint in 1921 as a belated acknowledgement of the 100th anniversary of Alabama's admission to the Union in 1819. They will be honored at our 45th Anniversary Gala Luncheon on June 14 in San Francisco. Honorees: Myriah Epino, Julia Sanchez, and Amelia Wagoner A first generation college athlete, Myriah survived a sexual assault by a fellow student athlete her first semester of college. When she reported the assault to her school, they issued a mutual no-contact order, meaning Myriah’s movements were suddenly restricted and she faced potential discipline if she accidentally violated the order, or if her assailant tried to use it against her in retaliation — which he did. The school’s investigation dragged on for far too long, taking its toll on Myriah, and when her assailant violated the no-contact order, the school did nothing and called her not credible. A boys' camping event at the site of the Brownsea Island Scout camp from 1 to 8 August 1907 is regarded as the origin of the worldwide Scouting movement. Held on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour, southern England, it was organised by Robert Baden-Powell (pictured) to test his ideas for the book Scouting for Boys. Boys from different social backgrounds participated in activities themed around camping, observation, woodcraft, chivalry, lifesaving and patriotism. Up to the early 1930s, camping by Boy Scouts continued on Brownsea Island. In 1962, the island became a nature conservation area owned by the National Trust. The following year, Olave Baden-Powell reopened the island to the public, and in 1964 a formal 50-acre (200,000 m2) Scout campsite was established there.
